Oh my goodness...

We leave for South Africa tomorrow.

It is completely unbelievable.

What is also completely unbelieveble is how much we still have left to do before we leave.  Ray has to be at work at 7:00 am tomorrow morning and I am meeting him at the airport at 8:00 am.  This is insane.  I wonder if I'll sleep at all tonight...

Eek!  So much left to pack and clean!

AAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

Does going on vacation from work and then coming back to work seem pointless sometimes?  I feel like it's not really a vacation... More of just a displacement of stress.

Undecided

Lunch on the Lake

Thursday, 14 August 2008 @ 22:53 by corinn

Today was another day of wedding preparations.  We started out our morning with a little baking for the following day's rehearsal dinner.  Kristen worked on the brownies and angel food cake, while I was put to work creating the bagel crisps.  While all the yummy items were cooling (and myself and the entire family were threatened with unimaginable acts if we ate any) Kristen and I headed out the front porch for some work on centerpieces.  Kristen recruited her younger brother Matt, who I knew from our years at UVM, to help with the process.

The centerpieces were bowels of lemons and limes, coordinating with the summer-time yellow and green theme.  The citrus had been purchased in bulk and stored in Kristen's parents' cellar.  But before it could make it's appearance at the wedding, it needed some spurcing up.  This came in the form of a good soak and scrub in baking soda and water and a rub down and some drying time on the front porch.  Matt was a great sport and excellent company, as we spent some time teasing Kristen together.

With all of tomorrow's food safely stored away and the lemons and limes back in their boxes Kristen and I headed out for our day's activities.  Our first stop was at the hair dresser's who would be doing Kristen's hair do for the wedding day.  We spent some time chatting with the other clients and looking through a series of fairly out-dated (the 1980's are still alive!) hairstyle books.  It was certainly a trip!  Kristen ultimately decided on a simple pulled back look and we were on our way.

Our afternoon stop was at the family lake house of one of the other bridesmaid's, Diana.  Her family has a gorgeous house right on the Caspian Lake, not to far from the Highland Lodge, where Kristen spent many of her summers (and winter breaks) working.  Both Kristen and Diana grew up in this area and remember many summer days spent at this lovely location.  It was a wonderful place for the bridesmaids to gather for a little Lunch on the Lake.

We met Diana, Kristen's sister Sarah and Kat here for an afternoon of wine, cheese and other delectable treats.  We spent most of the afternoon chatting, getting to know each other and enjoying the spectacular view!

As late afternoon/early evening rolled around we headed off to our final task for the day.  In anticipation of the wedding, Kat and I had teamed up and rented a two-bedroom condo at Jay Peak, where the reception would be held.  While our husbands were not yet with us, we had opted to start our stay tonight, so that we would be ready to go for the upcoming days preparations.  Wanting to get a head's start on the following day's reception hall decoration, Kristen had loaded her car with all of the favors, centerpieces and decorations (as well as me, Kat and all of our luggage!) and drove us up to Jay Peak to spend the night with us.  Our adventures didn't stop there.  Once we arrived, checked in and found our way through the construction we finally found our lovely condo.  It had just about everything we could want: a full kitchen, lovely porch, a living room with a fire place, TV, DVD player and iPod speakers.... oh and two bedrooms: one with a king bed and one with two double beds.  The hotel had failed to mention this fact at the time of booking.  While this worked out ideally for three ladies, it wasn't quite what two married couples were looking for.  After a bite of dinner at the pub at the bottom of the hill, Kat and I contacted the front desk, and were assured the situation could all be sorted out in the morning.  We headed to bed with the anticipation of all of the following day's activities, and the excitement of getting our sleeping situation sorted out.

Wedding Preparations Begin!

Wednesday, 13 August 2008 @ 22:01 by Corinn

So today Kristen drove down to Burlington to pick me up and bring me up to the North East Kingdom to help with the wedding preparations.  On our way up we stopped at a grocery store in Stowe to buy the food for the rehearsal dinner.  It's a good thing Kristen brought me - there was so much food that we needed two carts (one for the beer)! Smile  After shopping we drove another hour to her parents house and dropped off the food.  We then headed over to Ben's parents house to pick up the groom.  Kristen and Ben needed to pick up their marriage license and I got to tag along.  This experience seemed pretty typical of much of this week.  We arrived at the Town Clerk's office and Kristen and Ben handed in their application.  The Town Clerk told us she hadn't done "many of these" so she sent us outside while she typed it up.  We sat outside on the grass for about 20 minutes.  In that time we were almost attacked by a pair of geese and had chickens searching for food all around us.  Once the Town Clerk had finished we were on our way back to Ben's house.

The plan at Ben's was to get the favors in order.  Kristen realized that we had brought all the Jelly Belly jellybeans, but had forgotten the boxes they were going into.  We hopped in the car for a half-hour drive (each way) to retrieve the boxes.  Once back at Ben's we took over the TV room with our project.  I folded the boxes and Kristen cut the tissue paper.  We mixed the three types of beans: Lemon Drop, Margarita and Pina Colada (do you see the theme?).

Once each box was filled it was tied with green and yellow ribbons (do you see a color scheme?) and had an adorable little tag attached.  The favors were also doubling as place cards at the reception: when the reception hall gets set up Kristen will place each box at the guests' place settings, so they know where to sit.  Brillant!  They turned out completely adorable!

After all of our hard work we were heartily rewarded: Ben's mom made a homemade pasta dinner!  A little salad, a little wine and a little Sinatra rounded out the evening.  It was nice to relax after our days work, and the Carbonettis were so welcoming!

After dinner (and cannolis for dessert) Kristen and I headed back to her parents' house to sleep.  This was quite a process in and of itself.  Kristen's siblings were both staying at her parents to help with the wedding preparations. So when we arrived home at about 10, Cormic (Kristen's sister's 1.5 year-old) was already asleep.  We quietly sneeked upstairs and into Kristen's room.  I would estimate that about 65% of the available floor space in Kristen's room was covered in boxes from Macy's, Crate & Barrel and Bed, Bath & Beyond.  She had not started opening wedding presents yet and the boxes were stacked almost to the ceiling!  Once we got inside and closed the door there was just enough room for one of us to sleep in the single bed and the other to sleep on the cot her dad had left for us.  Nothing like close quarters!  Made me feel like I was in college again: sleeping in a single bed with a roommate (and almost no space)!

Two Buckets of Balls

Tuesday, 12 August 2008 @ 21:38 by Corinn

As part of our stay-cation this week Ray and I went out to the Essex Driving Range to hit some balls.  This was my first driving range trip, and Ray was very patient explaining the form and technique to me.  For the most part I was completely pathetic, but I did manager to actually hit the ball a few times (we won't mention how many times I missed the ball entirely).  It was a gorgeous day, and once the eight-year-olds finished up at the other end of the range we had a (quiet and) fun time.

Ray's longest drive was out by the 250 yard marker.  Most of the balls that I actually managed to hit landed near that red flag (on the right, maybe 50 yards away).  I did have one amazing swing, the last ball in my bucket, and it went all the way out to about 125 yards away!  I was thrilled, and it was certainly the best way to end the experience!

Here is Ray "callling the shots" - as his cell phone started to dial in his pocket again!  Laughing

There was also a batting cage at the driving range.  Ray risked a big $1.00 to hit 12 pitches on "baseball - medium".
