A mourning of the King of Pop

Tuesday, 30 June 2009 @ 00:05 by raymond
I don’t understand why, but I’ve been very saddened by Michael Jackson’s passing since the day I heard the news.  I’ve been reading almost everything on the web about him and have been somewhat in denial about his death.  I've also been listening to his music as often as I have the opportunity.  Maybe it's because I've been interested in his music since I was a child... Listening to him as often or more than my parents, who greatly enjoyed his music as well.  The music always gave me chills up my back just because they were well orchestrated, written, and most notabily, sung by a genius.

I’ve always wanted to dance and sing like Michael, but that never happened.  Yet, other things about him inspired me to be/think like him.  I think his generosity and kindness towards people contributed to that.  I’ve never been one to look too much into his personal life because I felt the music alone drew my attention towards his cause to make a difference.  One of my favorite songs I try to live by is “Man in the Mirror”; I think the follow words are something to live by:

I'm Gonna Make A Change, For Once In My Life
It's Gonna Feel Real Good, Gonna Make A Difference
Gonna Make It Right . . .

As I, Turn Up The Collar On My Favorite Winter Coat This Wind Is Blowin' My Mind
I See The Kids In The Street, With Not Enough To Eat Who Am I, To Be Blind?
Pretending Not To See Their Needs A Summer's Disregard, A Broken Bottle Top And A One Man's Soul
They Follow Each Other On The Wind Ya' Know 'Cause They Got Nowhere To Go That's Why I Want You To Know

I'm Starting With The Man In The Mirror
I'm Asking Him To Change His Ways
And No Message Could Have Been Any Clearer
If You Wanna Make The World A Better Place
Take A Look At Yourself, And Then Make A Change

I've Been A Victim Of A Selfish Kind Of Love
It's Time That I Realize That There Are Some With No Home, Not A Nickel To Loan
Could It Be Really Me, Pretending That They're Not Alone?

A Willow Deeply Scarred, Somebody's Broken Heart And A Washed-Out Dream
They Follow The Pattern Of The Wind, Ya' See Cause They Got No Place To Be
That's Why I'm Starting With Me

Rest in Peace and thanks Michael for inspiring me to do what I try to do on a daily basis.

We're on a Boat

Thursday, 18 June 2009 @ 22:52 by corinn

Today was the Second Annual Champlain College Staff Appreciation Cruise - and we were cruising the lake on Northern Lights!  Clearly, Geeda and Ken came to par-tay!  The EMC was well represented - Sarah, Ken, Ray and Heather all attended, and Jay, Geeda and I rounded out the crew.  We boarded the boat around 6:00 pm and were greated with a slight Mexican theme, two drink tickets (margaritas - yum!) and buffet of burritos, quesadillas and other delights.

Once our cruise was underway, and everyone was fed, the committee who had coordinated the event (Sarah included) started the game play!  Each staff member had submitted an interesting "fact" about him/herself prior to the event.  The committee had taken these facts and printed them all up on large sheets of paper.  First, the committee selected one random participant to play - the first round it turned out to be Ray!  Then five other staff members were randomly selected.  Ray was given 5 of the "facts" - each one matched one of the folks in line in front of him - and it was his job to match them up, but he only had 2 minutes!

Ray's buddy Matt (who he went to high school with, and also has Ray's old job in IT) was part of Ray's line up!  Unfortunately... Ray wasn't very good at the game - he didn't get any correct matches!  He was an excellent sport, and received a wonderful parting gift - a gift certificate to Mexcali!  There were 5 rounds of the game total, split up over the course of the evening.  Ray was part of the line up in the second round - he was successfully matched with his "fact" - that his Mom had once called Presedent Regan and asked him to find her husband a job!

We ended up with a lovely sunset, which we viewed from the very cool and breeze-y upper deck!

All in all it was an awesome evening!  It felt great for everyone to take a break, get out and have some fun!  It was also really cool to hang out with Ray's co-workers and their spouses in such a fun environment.  We are looking forward to the Third Annual Champlain College Staff Appreciation Cruise!

Oh Baby!

Sunday, 14 June 2009 @ 20:19 by corinn

Today was the long awaited, much anticipated baby shower for Jina!  Vanessa had put together quite a crew of helpers, and we were all at St. Francis Xavier school at noon to get ready.  Vanessa had recruited Nate's mom, Patty, and most of Jina's former bridesmaids (myself and Nate's sister, Krista, included) to set up the room.  The guests were due to arrive around 1:30, so we started setting up tables, arranging gifts, flowers, cakes, silverware, etc.  Vanessa arrived around 1:00 with almost all of the food!  She and Patty had also put together some awesome photo collages of Nate and Jina's lives:

Guest of honor was due to arrive at 2:00, and everyone else knew about the shower, including Nate, but her.  Fortunately, Jeff and Patti (Nate's best man and his wife - also a former bridesmaid) were up for the weekend for the St. Mike's reunion.  They had spent the morning visiting with Nate and Jina and had convinced them to come to Colchester to visit another friend.  Just as they were getting ready to depart, Jina started having some minor contractions.  Occassional contractions are nothing new for this lady - she has them generally a few times a day for less than an hour.  Since the party was for Jina, and since we didn't actually want the baby to arrive BEFORE the shower, everyone waited patiently for things to settle down.

Fortunatley our ace in the hole was able to update me via text message about their delay and arrival status.  When we heard they were just around the corner, all of the ladies attending the shower rushed out to the front of the school, where Nate neatly pulled up and deposited his wife.

It took us forever to get her inside and sitting down!  Jina greeted and hugged every person at the shower and even spent a little time looking around the room and at all the photos.  Vanessa had also decorated the room with art work Jina had done in elementary school and a college of children's books and baby clothes.  Once Jina was settled we did some introductions around the room and each one of Jina's former bridesmaids offered small speeches with bits of advice (from those who are mothers) and well wishes.  Then it was time to eat!  As you can imagine, Vanessa put out quite the spread!  There was WAY too much food, but everyone enjoyed it hardily and had no trouble going for seconds.

After lunch Jina did her best to open all of the gifts that had been brought - and there were quite a few!  She received almost everything on her registry, including a few homemade treasures from family members - highlights were hand knit blankets and hats from Nate's Grandmother and a wooden toy chest by Aunt Diana.  By the end of the gifts it was late in the afternoon and most of the guests had to head out.  Vanessa had invited the boys to join us for cake, so Nate, Ray and Jeff arrived to do some damage to the food and help with the clean up.

Poor lady - Jina started having contractions almost as soon as the gift opening was complete!  When she arrived we had joked with her that she only needed to make it through opening the presents before she had the baby - and then we could send the cake with her to the hospital!  While it didn't come to that, she did end up making a visit to the ER, just to check things out.  They put her on a bit of bed rest, and after about 36 HOURS the contractions did finally stop!

Overall we were all thrilled that the shower ended up as a surprise, and I know that Jina was touched and excited to see so many family and friends there to celebrate.  We are so excited to meet Anastasia - now that the shower is over, she can come any time!  Smile
